Happy 50th Birthday Atlas Bulk Carriers!
I started out with just one secondhand unreliable lorry all those years ago bought for £400, when muck-away prices were 25p per Cubic Yard, diesel was less than £1.00/Gallon, and tipping at landfill was typically 50p/load. There was no power steering on my 8-wheeler, and no heater or radio, but I enjoyed the camaraderie, the outdoor life and the pioneering spirit of all the owner drivers. It was a rough and ready existence but there was plenty of work, and with determination and the necessity of feeding a growing family I persisted and gradually the company grew bigger and more successful.
Fast-forward fifty years, through countless setbacks, recessions, growing legislation, premises moves, ever increasing costs, pandemics, Brexit etc…, and by some miracle we’re not just surviving but thriving; and this is down to the team who put their faith in me and forgave my mistakes and occasional grumpiness.
There’s no doubt that our most valuable assets are our staff. It’s thanks to their hard work and dedication that we’ve not just survived through so many setbacks, but thrived and achieved a high status amongst our peers in this challenging sector. Without my superb management team the company would have withered a long time ago and I extend my heartfelt thanks to Aaron, Paul, Eddie, Mike, Katie, Steve, Carl and Denis and, of course our team of drivers. They all deserve my appreciation and admiration for their professional conduct and uncomplaining hard work.
Although it’s a time of celebration, it’s also a time of reflection for me and I’d like to remember and pay tribute to all our team who passed away over these many years. Amongst them were Maurice Buignet, Mick Healy, Rob Kendry, Loe Lawrence, Richard Mallory, Roy Sutehall, Geoff Sutton, Eddie Robinson, Mo Waite. They all helped to build the company.
I close with grateful thanks to all the ABC Team, past and present.
